Should I build my website on Squarespace or Shopify?

Asked by someone who'd built a small business site on Squarespace · Answered by ·

The short answer

If you're selling products, go straight to Shopify. For anything else, I probably wouldn't build on Squarespace anymore.

For a product business, Shopify is the better long-term platform for the price. There’s no reason to start on Squarespace first.

If you’re enquiry-based, where every job is bespoke and the price is on application, you don’t need e-commerce at all. A cart and checkout are no use to you. You need people to get in touch. A simple static site that captures enquiries does the job.

The reason I’ve gone off Squarespace is how fast that kind of site can be built now. I recently built a fully responsive site, with a CMS I can edit, using AI coding tools. It took me about two hours. A year ago, that would have been a Squarespace or WordPress job.
