When is Shopify Plus worth upgrading to?
Answered by Nathan Frater ·
The short answer
When the total case adds up, not just the transaction fees. Count currency conversion, checkout upsells and fewer failed orders as well. If you're about to sell into another country, it's kind of a no-brainer.
Most people open a calculator, work out what they’d save on transaction fees, and decide it isn’t worth it. That saving is much smaller than it used to be, because most transactions now run through Shop Pay. On fees alone, break-even can look a long way off.
So look at the total cost of those kinds of things. Currency conversion is the one people forget. If you’re selling into another market, you’re losing a bit on the exchange rate with every order. If you’re modelling the upgrade, make sure that’s in the numbers.
Then add what Plus gives you at checkout. You can run upsells in the cart and at checkout, capture custom information at checkout, and validate addresses before an order goes through. That last one cuts failed orders and the support tickets that come with them. You also get a faster theme to work with.
Where it becomes an easy decision is international expansion. Plus lets you run multiple stores, one per country, under the one licence. You stop getting hammered on exchange rates every time you sell into a market like the US. If a second country is on your roadmap in the next year, run the numbers with that store in them before you decide.
